Basalt Fiber in Key Industries

2025-08-26

Energy Sector

Basalt fiber-reinforced airtight shotcrete technology has shown exceptional performance in several key areas. It enhances the flexural and tensile strength of concrete, mitigates alkali-aggregate reactions, reduces rebound, and contributes to carbon reduction. The technology also provides excellent airtightness and durability. This makes it an effective solution for managing the unpredictable distribution and unknown origins of gas in non-coal seam gas tunnels, helping to prevent gas outburst accidents.

Due to its high-temperature and Corrosion Resistance, basalt fiberis uniquely suited for the petrochemical industry. It can be used to manufacture high-pressure pipelines that are wrapped with epoxy resin, providing both Thermal Insulation and anti-corrosion benefits.

In the new energy sector, lithium-ion batteries are at risk of thermal runaway and explosion under abusive conditions. However, when 3.0mm basalt fiber aerogel is used, a thermal runaway warning sensor successfully provides an alert. Furthermore, Yan Jinjin and others discovered that basalt fiber-reinforced high-density polyethylene composites have excellent termite resistance and thermal stability, making them suitable for manufacturing cable sheathing materials.

Defense and Aerospace

Basalt fiber's lightweight, high-strength, and corrosion-resistant properties give it broad application prospects in the defense and military industry. It can be used to manufacture tanks, armored vehicles, bomb disposal vehicles, bomb disposal blankets, shell casings, and military fortification tunnel doors. It can also be used in aircraft fuselages, decorative parts, power system components, glider wings, and as insulation and soundproofing for engine and pneumatic equipment exhaust systems.

In terms of bulletproof materials, basalt fiber-reinforced composites show excellent energy absorption under impact, primarily through tension, compression, delamination, shear fracture, and fiber pull-out. Composites with a smaller fiber diameter and lower fabric areal density demonstrate better bulletproof performance for the same anti-ballistic area.

In June 2024, the Chang'e-6 mission successfully deployed a "stone version" of the Chinese flag on the far side of the Moon, which further proved the unique value of basalt fiber in the aerospace field. This achievement not only demonstrates the technical strength of basalt fiber in specialty materials but also opens up new possibilities for its application in a wider range of fields.
